Province Needs Help in Newmont Chase

Jakarta.
The West Nusa Tenggara administration has invited investors to help it acquire the remaining shares to be divested by miner Newmont Nusa Tenggara, priced at $271.6 million.

The invitation came after Governor Muhammad Zainul Majdi submitted a formal letter to the central government requesting that the province receive priority in acquiring the remaining 7 percent of NNT’s shares.

Government Allows Mining In Protected Forest

JAKARTA. Protected forests will be opened up to mining operations. The government is preparing a presidential regulation (perpres) to allow the use of protected forests for mining sites. As such, mining operations in protected forest areas will be able to resume once the Perpres is published.

"Underground mining will be allowed in protected forest, that’s the gist,” Zulkifli said last week. According to Zulkifli, a vital resource contained inside protected forests is geothermal. "Geothermal sources are found underground,” he said.

NTB Wants Newmont 7% Stake

JAKARTA – West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) administrations and legislatives (DPRD) are determined to acquire the 7% stake in PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) valued at US$271.6 million divested under last year’s program, to maximize mining in the interests of the local population
NTB Province DPRD speaker Lalu Sudjirman said the regional government, at the provincial as well as the regency levels, had formally written to the Finance Minister stating their desire to acquire the divested 7% NNT stake.

Newmont Laments The Concentrate Shipping Halt

JAKARTA – PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) management lamented the West Sumbawa Regency Administration’s decision to put a ban on the company’s concentrate shipping to Germany.

Arif Perdanakusumah, PT NNT senior manager of External Affairs, said that the ship owned by the company has been confined for four days at Benete Port, West Sumbawa. The port is operated by PT NNT.

Arif said suspension of shipment of the company’s concentrate on grounds of alleged violation of export procedures would very likely incur losses for the state and the company.
